A group called the Concerned Musicians has started an Anti-Piracy Campaign. This is a sensitive issue in our business as piracy does huge damage to many businesses and individuals, like composers.
Please visit SAMRO's website for the news. CASA would like to hear your views on this issue so...please post below. |

Avast ye landlubbers!
As this site's self appointed antagonist, let me state for the record that I love pirates. They are way cool, even as cool an Ninjas...sometimes. Johnny Depp is my favourite.
Unfortunately it is against my religion to join any club starting with the word "concerned" , all of such clubs who strangely seem to want to gather in groups and burn stuff.
Seriously though, the little blurb on the SAMRO site put me off. I don't know why, but it did. I could never get myself to feel warm and fussy about invitations to march and join mob actions.
Also the absence of NORM and the prominence of SARRAL under the supporting bodies does not sit well...
An anti piracy movement involving SARRAL. I think there is a joke in there somewhere... _________________ Save Planet Earth ! It is the only one with chocolate... |

Piet,
You say you love pirates....your signature makes the sweeping claim (possibly unconfirmed) that only Earth has chocolate....man, it's hard to take you seriously.
Your comment about SARRAL does resonate though.
Let's see what these so-called concerned folks actually do. If they get results, well and good. If they become lawless and violent, CASA will remove its support.
Regards - Colin |

I agree. If it looks like a movement with some direction and effectivity, I'll be in. If it's going to be another hippy fest, and these has been too many, screw 'em. For my contribution, I undertake to punch the next person who brings a copied local CD to my studio in the nose.
Oh, and I strive to never be too serious . This is the MUSIC business after all. Serious people work at the post office. _________________ Save Planet Earth ! It is the only one with chocolate... |

Well...Mzwakhe Mbuli and Operation Dudula are gaining ground. SABC's Special Assignment dealt comprehensively with the piracy topic this evening and the message was clear:
Piracy is a criminal offence.
CASA has pledged its support to Operation Dudula - it's quite obvious that composers also lose out whenever material is copied illegally. We have further views about piracy, including the illegal use of Library Music and the failure by certain production companies to submit proper documentation (cue sheets).
CASA invites you to add your views.... |
