MECHANICAL RIGHTS - update

Earlier this year (2006), SAMRO announced its intention to administer Mechanical Royalties (see NEWS FLASH below). They have now made considerable progress in securing reciprocal agreements with foreign societies. In simple terms, this means that if South African music is reproduced in other countries, then collection societies worldwide will send the money to SA for our local composers. Also, if foreign works are recorded (copied) here in SA, the relevant royalties will be sent to the rightsholders in other countries.

Historically, this has been controlled by SARRAL which, along with NORM, have been the only 2 collection bodies up till now. SARRAL is currently under threat of liquidation. These legal proceedings began in mid-October 2006 but were postponed. SARRAL's future will hopefully be determined in the High Court, early in 2007.

Composers should now consider their options - either stay with SARRAL or appoint SAMRO to manage their royalties. CASA cannot take an official view on this, but we highly recommend that composers attend the SAMRO AGM on 24 November 2006 (see news item below), particularly the morning session where questions can be asked.

For SAMRO's announcement, see their website

SAMRO AGM 2006

SAMRO has announced their 2006 Annual General Meeting plus a very important "pre-event". For some time, composers have been asking questions of SAMRO, raising issues, and making suggestions for the future. SAMRO has responded to this as follows: On the morning of the AGM (Friday 24 November 2006), SAMRO will host a "think-tank" or information session, running from 09:00 (please note corrected start time) to 13:00. The AGM follows after a light lunch at 14:00

This is a great opportunity to bring questions and ideas to share with SAMRO and your fellow composers. Please make every effort to attend!

As a service to composers who live in cities other than Johannesburg and who can't attend, CASA would like to offer to take your input along to this special event. If you have any wise and wonderful ideas on how to improve royalty collection, or have a terrible gripe about TV stations not submitting cue sheets, or any questions at all (within reason), please send CASA an email

Or...post your input at the CASA forums in this topic: SAMRO Annual General Meeting - Important news
This way, other composers will read your suggestions too and be able to share ideas and comment. This is what CASA is all about.

International Song Competition 2006

ISC (International Song Competition) is now accepting entries for 2006. ISC has increased the cash portion of its Grand Prize to $25,000 (US dollars), which makes it the largest cash Grand Prize in any songwriting competition.

Moshito 2006

Moshito 2006 will take place from 20-22 September, at Museum Africa in Newtown. This is always an important event on the SA musical calendar - for more info and programme details, visit the Moshito website

Operation Dudula

Operation Dudula, a new anti-piracy movement, is being spearheaded by recording artist and poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli, who told a gathering at Bassline in Newtown, downtown Johannesburg, on April 19th 2006 that it was time for musicians to stop talking and to start taking action. The message: it's time to confront those making and selling counterfeit discs. People who buy these cheaper copies are just as guilty.

The whole music industry, including composers, suffers huge losses as a result of illegal copying. CASA has pledged its support to this bold initiative.

We as composers suffer in other ways too: if a production company uses music and does not submit proper documentation (cue sheets), royalties can not be paid to the rightful owner of the music. This too is piracy - a criminal offence.

To discuss this hot issue, visit the CASA forums and post here

*** NEWS FLASH ***

CASA at SAMRO Sales Rep awards

SAMRO annually recognises its sales representatives that excel in the field and either meet or exceed the targets that are set for them. These are the people that travel the country to license venues and users of music. SAMRO invited CASA Chairman, Colin Shapiro (below left) to present the main award, the Representative of the Year.

The winner was Gerald Mckay (above right) who handled billings of over R1 million Rand! CASA is very grateful to all these hardworking folks who look after our royalties.
